The Bike Maker
The Bike Maker is an illustrated chapter book about a boy, Miles, coping with the death of his father. Throughout the story, the boy comes to terms with his father’s death and adopts a more mature and realistic outlook on life. Each illustration shows Miles’s transformation, starting with the scene depicting him lingering in front of his dad’s bike shop on a hot Louisiana day. After he crashes his bike, illustrated by the dramatic, midair flip off of his hand-made ramp, the warm sun highlighting his surprised face, he must summon the courage to enter his father’s shop. He then meets Ally, a talkative girl with curly orange hair who helps him repair his bike. This story is autobiographical, inspired by my dad’s final days in his garage building bikes. Not only have I created this book to help children cope with loss, but it has helped me heal as well.
